Customer Spotlight: Patti McCarthy

Hello Digital Scrapbookers!  Today I'm bringing you a spotlight on one if my scrapping idols, Patti McCarthy.  You've probably seen her pages around digi-land, and if you haven't, here is a link to her gallery - run over there and take a peak and then come back here!   I asked her some questions, here's what she had to say!

Name/username: Patti McCarthy

Tell us a little about yourself:
I'm Patti McCarthy and my family and I live in the province of Alberta, Canada.  I have two handsome, energetic boys.  I am married to Glenn, who puts up with my endless amounts of scrapbook 'shop talk'.  I have pushed myself  into working outside my comfort zone and must say I love it!  I am addicted to PSE and all the templates, kits and digital elements that go with it!!   In my opinion, a girl can never have too much:)

What’s your favorite type of product to scrap with (ie., papers, flowers, etc.)? I love paint, stitches and fasteners of any kind.
What's your go-to scrapping technique?  White space, clusters with lotsa layers!   Paint, circles, stitches and fasteners thrown in for good measure make me happy:)

What's on your wishlist out of Lita's products that you don't already have?

Strawberry wontons with chocolate strawberries

With the Chinese New Year approaching (Monday, 23 January 2012.) I thought I would share a recipe with you, that would be perfect for seeing in the chinese New Year.

I have a very sweet tooth so this is a dessert recipe !!! With it being the year of the Dragon, I decided the colour red would be my theme .................

Strawberry wontons with chocolate strawberries

Less than 30 mins preparation time
10 to 30 mins cooking time
Serves 2

For the strawberry wontons

  • 2 sheets ready-rolled filo pastry
  • 55g/2oz strawberries, hulls removed, flesh chopped
  • 2 free-range eggs, beaten
  • vegetable oil, for deep frying

For the chocolate strawberries

  • 5 strawberries
  • 85g/3oz dark chocolate
  • icing sugar, to serve

Preparation method
For the strawberry wontons, cut the filo pastry into 8cm/3in squares.
Place a teaspoonful of the chopped strawberries into the centre of each of the pastry squares.
Using a pastry brush, brush the edge of each pastry square with beaten egg, then seal the edges to create parcels.
Heat the oil in a deep heavy-based frying pan until a breadcrumb sizzles and turns brown when dropped into it. (CAUTION: hot oil can be dangerous. Do not leave unattended.) Carefully lower the strawberry wontons into the hot oil in batches and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until crisp and golden-brown. Remove from the pan using a slotted spoon and set aside on a warm plate. Repeat the process with the remaining wontons.
For the chocolate strawberries, bring a small amount of water to the boil in a pan. Reduce the heat until the water is simmering, then suspend a heatproof bowl over the water. (Do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water.) Add the chocolate to the bowl and stir until smooth and completely melted.
Cover a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Dip the bottom half of each of the strawberries into the melted chocolate, then place the strawberries onto the baking tray and set aside to cool and set. When cool, chill the chocolate strawberries in the fridge. Reserve the remaining melted chocolate, reheating as necessary.
To serve, place the chilled chocolate strawberries onto a serving plate and place the strawberry wontons alongside. Dust with icing sugar, then drizzle over the remaining melted chocolate. Serve immediately.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm Sounds Tasty right ???!!!!

Pinning My Time Away...

I don't think there's anything much better or more relaxing than to sit down and just browse Pinterest. I seriously think I could lose myself in there all day. I've been known to lose a few hours here and there. I thought I would swing by today and share some of my recent favorites! (Images are linked)

I love this idea with the leaves being made out of cute scrapbook paper! What a lovely decoration!!

This is one my most recent pins...I so need to do better about making menus for my family and what a cute way to do it!

I'm really thinking about making a banner and this one is just too cute and doesn't look complicated at all!

This is one that I actually did...chopping the sleeves off an old sweater.  Mine didn't turn out quite as great as the photo, but I have worn them under tall boots and it's such a cute look!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I'm back to pinning!!

Hybrid Baby Bodysuit using Flutterby Deux

Hello, Pene here again with a hybrid project I made for my friend's new baby girl.  I have made several of these body suits as they are unique and personalised, look great and are really easy to make!

My friend had a baby girl who she named Ruby, so I wanted something really pretty and girly.  Flutterby Deux is one of my favourite kits and it was perfect for what I wanted.

I measured the bodysuit so the image would fit and made a new blank file in Photoshop Elements at this size.  I then made the image and shadowed it as I would a normal layout.  Before printing to the transfer paper, remember to flip the image, either in Photoshop or using your printer settings so that when you iron it on the piece of fabric it will be the right way.
The transfer paper will have it's own instructions as to how to iron it on your garment.  Basically, once the ink has dried, you cut out as much of the image as you can so you don't get too much of an edge of transfer paper on your garment.  Then using a dry iron, you iron firmly over the image for about 30 secs. Once it is stuck down well, you peel off the backing and you're done!

I also used some papers and elements from the kit to make a matching gift bag and tag:

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and it inspires you to get out the transfer paper and decorate some garments!  You are limited only by your imagination!

Cheers,
Pene

Start your year right

Hi, Athena here. It's that time of year when we all vow to take off a couple pounds.I have been at it a few months and I can tell you salad has been my friend since vegetables are not one of my favorites. Salads can be a nutritious and low calorie food choice as long as you don’t overdo it on the dressing! Finding salad dressings that aren't loaded with oil, salt and sugar can be challenging.

Here is a simple little vinaigrette that packs a lot of flavor but very few calories and fat grams to help you lose that fat.

Balsamic Vinaigrette
Makes 3 servings (2 Tablespoons each serving)
1/4 teaspon garlic powder
2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 Tablespoon water

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk them together well. Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Per Serving: 11 Calories; trace Fat (29.1% calories from fat); trace Saturated Fat; 1g Protein; 2g Carbohydrate; trace Dietary Fiber; 0mg Cholesterol; 125mg Sodium. Exchanges: 0 Grain(Starch); 0 Lean Meat; 0 Fruit; 0 Fat; 0 Other Carbohydrates.

Paper Crafts @ Pinterest

Pinterest...one of the best internet sites ever!  Also one of the biggest time suckers ever....

I like browsing for craft ideas and seriously this place is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!  Type what you're looking for in the search box, sit back and let your eyes revel in the goodness that unfolds!

I searched 'paper" and this is a small selection of what I found that I've repinned for a rainy day:

This gorgeously simple heart garland made out of a dictionary.  You can find the tutorial here.

I love these inchies!  The colours make me happy and imagine what you could do with this idea! Inchies are 1" x 1" squares made from anything for anything...they could be magnets, made of paper, fabric, glass...the possibilities are endless!  More information on inchies here.

And to finish, check out this amazing site on paper flowers for your wedding!  That bouquet is stunning!!

I hope you feel inspired to create today!

Cheers,
Pene
